Well, Didn't See THAT Coming.

"It has begun."

So Gisele wrote to me about this news article.

I got sidetracked into a discussion about whether "original English-language" mangas constitute "fake" mangas (short summation: NO), but that's beside the main point: newspapers? Reaching out to manga? American-produced manga?

Granted, this is just two newspapers, which puts Tokyopop about neck and neck with Scott Kurtz and Keenspot in terms of Changing The Rules of Newspaper Syndication. But it's still an interesting convergence. And T-Pop has the muscle to push it forward if they're pleased with the results.

This'll be interesting...

Comments:
I don't know the details of the Tokyopop deal, but if it's anything like previous attempts to break into the papers...

Well, day laborers have no security and experienced workers lose their jobs. You know what I mean?

On the subject of reverse racism, i agree, and I think it's total bullshit that an American Kid aspiring to draw manga has to hide the fact he's american or use a fake japanese sounding name in order to be taken seriously. That is just....UGH.

One Manga in papers: The syndicates have lost touch with how newspapers actually work... i think that's the major problem. You mean, suddenly they woke up and thought about getting teenage readers??? And Manga was the answer? UGH. This proves to me that the Syndicates are just grasping at straws as their engine "The newspaper" shrinks and shrinks... newspapers are going back to a more LOCAL community feels. While the circulation of giant newspapers falls, the circ of smaller community newspapers stays about the same. Perhaps syndicates should have thought about contracting more "regional" talent in specific areas.

Well, most of them don't NEED to use a fake Japanese-y sounding name, they just want to.
