Time Well Spent...

Whilst searching for prospective Smashers, I found "Misspent Youths #1" by David Lee Ingersoll. Despite the extremely well-drawn violence, I just don't think it's quite "actiony" enough to invite to GS... which is a shame, because it's really well done! Give it a look.

Pretty good stuff. Thanks for the link. :) (Have you seen Reckless Youth? That's a good wacky-comic fantasy, and easily action enough.)

Smart to pass on this one, although I have no idea what you see in it in the first place. The art is awkward, amateurish, and mostly ugly.
And the excessive use of zip-a-tone is painful to the eyes.

I assumed that was a deliberately grungy style chosen for the strip. He's a capable artist, so it's not from lack of choice.

Well his portfolio is certainly much more appealing. I have no problem with a "grungy" and/or minimalistic style. Maybe he was trying for the streetwise look of Spain and many underground cartoonists from the 60's.
But the aesthetics of his strip are ugly no matter how you slice it. So awful in fact that maybe it's a parody?

Mr. Campbell -
Thanks for the link. You've prompted me to finally add the rest of the pages for Misspent Youths #1. The last page will update the first week of July.

Much as I'd like to say I chose that grungy style, I'm afraid it's not the case. When I did the series way back in 1991 that was the best I could draw.

Actually, the art was done on duoshade board. At the time I was enamored with the effects that duoshade could create. I think my main inspiration was the Teenage Ninja Mutant Turtles but a lot of black and white artists were using it at the time. I doubt if the boards are being made anymore. I'm pretty sure that computers have made them obsolete.

Thank you!
